Students, earn community service hours this summer at The Green Door Thrift Shop

Tue, 06/19/2012 - 09:41
The Green Door Thrift Shop

The Green Door Thrift Shop, which is a 59-year-old ministry of the Women of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, is looking for student volunteers who are available during the summer. This is a great way to earn community service hours, work with a multigenerational group of volunteers, and help raise money for a variety of charitable organizations who benefit from the Green Door's profits. (This year they gave $44,000 to charity!)

The Green Door primarily consigns and sells clothing, housewares, and small furnishings. They are located at 1030 Nacogdoches (behind the Wal-greens at Basse and Broadway) and are open Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00am - 1:00pm. The student volunteers will sell items, work the cash register, organize the store, help sort, label and price items as appropriate for their age. Adult Green Door volunteers will always be present with the students at the shop, but we also welcome parents who would like to volunteer along with their children.

If you are interested, please contact Megan Maturo at meganejames@hotmail.com or (210) 422-8931 for more information and to arrange a time for training.

TMI welcomes incoming Headmaster, Dr. John Cooper

Sun, 04/01/2012 - 00:00

To the TMI Community:
I am humbled and honored to have been chosen to become Headmaster of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas. The reputation that TMI has established over the decades is known and respected throughout the country and around the world.

It is with a sense of awe that I step into the "stream of history" that is TMI. The school's maxim is "Educating Leaders since 1893," and that is the challenge that I take up in accepting the position of Headmaster. I will give my utmost efforts to be an effective and inspiring Headmaster and a model of Servant Leadership.

In this task, I will need help from all of you. Whether your role at TMI is as a student, parent, faculty, staff, alumnus, Trustee, friend, or Governor, you can play a significant role in helping to assure the success of our school. I will begin my duties on July 1, 2012, but, in the meantime, I will work with Mr. Spencer, the Board of Governors, and members of the TMI Community to put the plans in place for a fantastic 2012-2013 school year.

The Four Pillars of TMI provide a template for all of us as we think about the contributions we can make. Academic success happens when you combine fantastically talented teachers and staff with a diverse and energetic group of students and give them the support of parents, alumni, donors, Trustees, and Governors. Athletic success is, similarly, the result of teamwork and collective effort by student-athletes, coaches, teachers, parents, and other adult role models. Military leadership success comes from the traditions and disciplines that are practiced every day by the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets, its student membership, and its adult leadership. Spiritual formation happens on that very special journey that all of us take as we seek God's presence in our lives and identify our own roles within the community of faith. What a privilege it is to be part of a school dedicated to these Four Pillars!

As we look ahead to the coming years at TMI, I'm sure that the school will climb new heights, blaze new trails, and be even more impressive tomorrow than it is today. I cannot look into a crystal ball and tell you exactly what that future looks like. But I do know this: It is a great future, one that we will build together, and one that will honor Jesus Christ.

My wife and I have much preparation to do between now and next summer, but I'm sure the months will fly by as we anticipate moving into Pryor House and beginning the work. In the meantime, we want to wish everyone a safe and productive school year. As I've written to the students, "Work hard, take care of each other, and show your Panther Spirit!"

With deepest regards,

John W. Cooper, Ph.D.
